About me

  • I am a MD specialized in geriatric medicine at the Catholic University of Rome, with a PhD in geriatric epidemiology from Karolinska Institutet. I am currently an Assistant Professor in Geriatric Medicine at the Aging Research Center of Karolinska Institutet. - 2019 PhD in Geriatric Epidemiology - 2016 Specialization in Geriatrics - 2010 Medical Doctor degree

Research

  • My main research interests are: *Multimorbidity development and its prognosis.* Multimorbidity, the co-occurrence of multiple diseases in the same individual, is the most common condition encountered in older people. During the past years, I focused my attention on the definition of multimorbidity and its measurement in older individuals. Together with a group of colleagues from KI and other international Institutions, we refined the concept of multimorbidity clusters and that of speed of multimorbidity development. We investigate the impact of multimorbidity clusters on several health-related outcomes, and we recently started looking at the risk factors and determinants (i.e., psychosocial, biological etc.) of fast disease accumulation. *Multidimensional assessment of health and biological age in older people.* Aging is a complex and heterogeneous process which greatly departs from the linearity of calendar time. We combine clinical, biological, functional and socio-demographic information a) to build reliable prognostic tools for risk stratification as for example the frailty index
  • b) to build measures of biological and phenotypic age
  • c) to identify homogeneous groups of individuals with specific needs, that may benefit from given preventive and therapeutic interventions. The combination of information on disease status with functional parameters (physical and cognitive) and frailty status has been investigated in several studies I authored and co-authored. /Full publication list/ here [1] /Google Scholar profile/ here [2] /*Selected publications:*/ *Vetrano DL*, Triolo F, Maggi S, Malley R, Jackson TA, Poscia A, Bernabei R, Ferrucci L, Fratiglioni L.
