As a Ph.D student but also a former M.D student at Karolinska Institutet, I'm not only doing research at the Dept. of oncology-pathology, but right now I'm spending most of my time in the ER at Karolinska University Hospital where I'm currently doing my clinical internship. Whenever I'm not working or doing research (I guess that's not a whole lot of time) I appreciate beauty in all its forms, whether as works of art, opera, literature, films or in culinary forms. I'm also addicted to tough work outs and the physiology behind a growing latissimus dorsi or increased endurance. Schwarzenegger watch out.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Swedish men. The incidence continues to rise as a result of PSA screening being more common among men today. There are several different subtypes of prostate cancer, some more aggressive than others. One of these subtypes, the ductal adenocarcinoma of the prostate, was initially described in 1967 and since then, several research groups have confirmed its more malignant course. It has a higher frequency of extra prostatic extension, positive margins, biochemical recurrence, clinical stage and metastasizes to organs such as penis which is not as common for the conventional acinar adenocarcinoma.
Our aim is to identify which histologic characteristics, if any, contribute to the adverse prognosis, identify a minimum of diagnostic criteria, search for diagnostic biomarkers by constructing a tissue micro array and by using laser capture micro dissection, identify any genetic variances in different ductal and acinar tumor foci within one prostate.
