First (Bachelor's) and second cycle (Master's) education

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology provides basic education in Biomedicine, Medicine and Optometry.

MTC teachers are also co-organizing six more courses for biomedical students at KI and KTH as well as a course in clinical microbiology for the medical students.

The Director of First Level Studies has the task of planning and coordinating First cycle (Bachelor's) educational activities at MTC. First cycle (Bachelor's) educational coordinator works in collaboration with the faculty at MTC and the education secretariat.

Bachelor Programme in Biomedicine

The Bachelor's Programme in Biomedicine at Karolinska Institutet is an international study programme taught in English.

Graduates in Biomedicine have a broad knowledge of the biology and pathology of the human body and an understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying major global diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, infections and neurological diseases.

Basic immunology including morphology and general functions of the cells, proteins and organs of the immune system. Maturation, interactions and regulations of innate and adaptive immune responses. Clinical orientated immunology including autoimmunity, allergy and transplantation immunology.Morphology, taxonomy, genetics and metabolism of bacteria. Microbial ecology including normal flora in humans. Interactions between bacteria and eukaryotic cells. Pathogenicity and virulence factors. Function of antibiotics at a molecular level. Structure, classification and replication of viruses. Viral pathogenicity and antiviral agents. Life cycle and pathogenicity of parasites. Traditional vaccines.

Master's Program in Biomedicine

The Global Master's Programme in Biomedicine gives students an in-depth knowledge within the broad and expanding biomedical field and specialises in creating new and advanced skills for the improvement of human health.

It is a natural education to follow an achieved BSc in the biomedical field.

The programme advances your knowledge in the broad and expanding fields of biomedicine and molecular medicine, aiming to contribute to improved human health. The Bologna Declaration in higher education throughout Europe is implemented, giving a student-centred education with an outcome-based curriculum.

The programme is developed by experienced scientists and is based on work done in the research laboratories at Karolinska Institutet.

It consists of compulsory taught components, large proportions of individual projects including a degree project and advanced elective courses. There are also opportunities for exchange studies.

Research Introductory Courses for Biomedical Students

These courses are offered to students enrolled in the bachelor’s programme in biomedicine at KI, one course per year of the programme.

The courses will give an introduction to how research is conducted. The courses consists of an introduction to how to write scientifically, to document research and an introduction to ethical considerations. The major part of the course consists of practically taking part in a research project. The course ends with oral presentations and a written report of the conducted research.

Medicine

MTC runs two courses (modules) as part of Karolinska Institutets Medical Doctor education.

Summer Schools

KI Summer Research School in Biomedical Research (Sommarforskarskola för gymnasieelever)

The KI Summer School in Medical Research is a research-introductory school for students enrolled in First-cycle (undergraduate) programs at Karolinska Institutet.

Amgen Scholars Program at Karolinska Institutet

The Amgen Scholars Program is a summer research programme in Biomedical Science for international and national undergraduate students, during which they will have the opportunity to conduct research at Karolinska Institutet for eight weeks.

Karolinska Institutet's Biomedical Summer Research School for high school students

If you find research exciting and have just completed your second or third year in high school in a science or engineering programme in Sweden, you can apply to Karolinska Institutet's Biomedical Summer Research School and have the chance to participate in a real research project.

Summer School in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics for high school students

If you have a great interest in computer programming and biomedical science this is the summer school for you. Five students will be able to join research teams at Karolinska Institutet and learn how to apply their computer knowledge to medical research. All students enrolled in their second or third year in science or technology programmes at high school level in Sweden are eligible to apply.
