Hematopoietic tumors are characterized by aberrant expression of large number of genes. We try to determine which minimal changes in gene expression that are necessary for tumor formation and also the dependence of these alterations in gene expression for sustained tumor growth. We believe this knowledge will be important for rational drug design.

Using retroviral expression vectors, combinations of tumor-associated genes are expressed in primary hematopoietic cells of various lineages and differentiation stages. Minimal combinations of genes resulting in cellular immortalization and tumor transformation are identified and further characterized. Experiments are performed with cells from various species including mouse and man.
