Phenotyping at KIMM
Karolinska Institutet Mouse Models offers the possibility to assist with phenotype analysis of genetically modified mice.
Phenotyping from Greek phainen (to show) and tupos (type) means in this context the detection of changes of observable features (like for example behavior, physiology) of genetically modified animals, based on the interaction of the genes of the animal. The changed phenotype reflects the influence of the gene on the organismal (animal) level.

Phenotyping at KIMM
KIMM's Mouse Clinic (KIMC) offers researchers the possibility to document the health of their genetically modified mouse strains according to international standards. This is preferably done through established phenotyping piplines, the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) and the German Mouse Clinic (GMC). You may also choose select phenotyping analyses. In order to submit an enquiry, please use the online enquiry links above.
Protocols are in accordance with the International Mouse Phenotyping Resource of Standardised Screens (IMPReSS) but may differ in some aspects.
Select phenotyping analyses
A range of select phenotyping analyses such as hematological-, physiological- and pathological and/or behavioural analyses are provided by the Mouse Clinic. Please read more about each service in the links below.
- Behavioural tests
- Physiological tests
- Morphological analysis - pathology (x-ray under development)
- Hematology, urine chemistry and clinical blood chemistry
Performed in collaboration with either two partners:
1. Swedish Toxicology Sciences Research Center (SweTox) in Gärtuna,
Plasma and serum analyses are conducted with three fixed kits;
1. Comprehensive diagnostics (Alb, Alt, Alp, Amy, Tot Bil, BUN, Ca, Crea, Glob, Glu, Phos, K, Na, Tot Prot)
2. Kidney profile (Alb, Cl, Crea, Glu, Phos, K, Na, Tot CO2, BUN)
3. Mammalian liver profile (Alb, Alt, Alp, Bile Acids, Tot Bil, Chol, GGT, BUN).
This means that depending on your requirements you may need to combine two or three kits.
2. Clinical Chemistry Laboratory, University Animal Hospital in Uppsala
For more information on available parameters, please use a Clinical Chemistry Laboratory referral.
- Eye morphology
Eye morphology is performed in collaboration with Sankt Erik Eye Hospital in Stockholm. Examination is performed in line with the IMPRESS protocols, except for the following exceptions: Examination using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Pentacam or Scheimpflug images cannot be performed.
- Immuno phenotyping
