Diabetes research with heart focus
Thomas Nyström and David Nathanson researchers at the department are participating in the DAISY project, a collaboration between a number of diabetes researchers and Astra Zeneca. Their research aims to highlight the harmful consequences of type 2 diabetes with main focus on cardiovascular disease.
Publication in PLOS One
Cesare Patrone and co-authors has shown that hypoglycemia is toxic to neural stem cells. This could have negative implications for diabetic patients suffering from stroke or other neurological disorders when under hypoglycemic conditions. The work provides new data on how hypoglycemia negatively impacts the brain as well as how this effect could be pharmacologically counteracted.
Harmful weight gain between pregnancies
Our researchers Martina Persson and Stefan Johansson has participated in a study showing that a more substantial weight gain between two pregnancies increases the risks of birth as-phyxia. The study is the first in the world to establish this link.
