Karolinska Institutet Core Facilities

Karolinska Institutet Core Facilities is an umbrella definition for service laboratories, resources and competence centres whose activities are coordinated, supervised and partly financed by the Board of Research (FS) in collaboration with the local committees for Research and Education (FoUU) of the associated hospitals.

Access to the Core Facilities is open to all researchers at KI and other academic institutions and also, to a limited extent, to commercial enterprises.

Service laboratories and resource centres operate on a fee per service basis while competence centres aim to disseminate specific technologies and know-how on a collaborative basis. Policies regarding services, access, fees and prioritization vary by facility.

Core Facilities are managed by departments or units within Karolinska Institutet or associated hospitals.

Genomics

Bioinformatics and Expression Analysis (BEA) Genomic analysis based on the Affymetrix, Agilent, Illumina and ABI platforms for microarrays, sequencing and qPCR. Regional facility of national interest within SciLifeLab.
Karolinska High Throughput Center (KHTC) KHTC offers access to automated screening and analysis platforms for applications in the fields of systems biology and drug discovery. Activities include, but are not limited to, HTS of siRNA and chemical compound libraries in various assays, analysis of biomolecular interactions and NGS projects. National facility within SciLifeLab.
KI Gene - Genetic Analysis Sanger DNA sequencing with fast turn-around time, gene expression analysis and analysis of genetic variations including SNPs, microsatellite markers and insertion/deletion polymorphisms.
Mutation Analysis Facility (MAF) Targeted DNA methylation, genome-wide DNA methylation, genome-wide genotyping, targeted SNP genotyping as well as genome-wide expression analysis. Regional facilities of national interest within SciLifeLab.

Proteomics

Advanced Mass Spectrometry Proteomics (AMSP) The Advanced Mass Spectrometry Proteomics facility provide services using the best available proteomics techniques and methods not offered by any other facility in Sweden. Regional facility of national interest within SciLifeLab.
Clinical Proteomics - Mass Spectrometry Mass spectrometry based analysis to generate extensive data on protein level changes in biological samples. Regional facilities of national interest within SciLifeLab.
Protein Science Facility Platforms for protein production, protein crystallography, and biophysical characterisation. National facility within SciLifeLab.

Imaging

Center for Live Imaging of Cells at Karolinska Institutet (CLICK) Imaging systems suitable for live cell time lapse-, deep tissue-, ion-, spectral-, confocal or general fluorescence imaging.  
Experimental Research and Imaging Centre (KERIC) Imaging analyses in experimental systems in combination with experimental surgery in large animals like swine as well as in rodents.  
MR Research Center Handles the MR Research capacity at the Neuroradiology Clinic.  

Biobanks

The Brain Bank Clinical and experimental neuropathology. Manages collection of postmortem human brain and spinal cord tissue.
Karolinska Healthcare Research Biobank Clinically evaluated fresh-frozen tumor tissues, including specimens from all major organs such as breast, prostate, endocrine organs, colon, brain, lung, etc.
KI Biobank KI Biobank is aiming to support researchers who conduct research studies with sample collections, both within and outside Karolinska Institutet. The Biobank can assist with the collection, handling, storage and traceability of research samples.

Epidemiology, bioinformatics, and biostatistics

Biostatistics core facility The core facility provides biostatistical collaboration and support to medical and public health research to ensure that experimental designs, data analyses, and interpretation and dissemination of research findings take advantage of the most efficient and innovative methods in biostatistics.
Clinical Epidemiology The core facility provides methodological support for researchers in clinical matters, both in planning and carrying out studies.

Experimental Research and Imaging Centre (KERIC) Imaging analyses in experimental systems in combination with experimental surgery in large animals like swine as well as in rodents.
Germ-free Research The core facility provides GF models to academic researchers as well as to the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.
Karolinska Center for Transgene Technologies Generation and storage of genetically modified mice and related techniques.
Karolinska Institutet Mouse Models (KIMM) Production, phenotypic analysis and archiving of mouse mutants to understand the role of genes in human diseases.
Morphological Phenotype Analysis (FENO) Specializing in the pathology of genetically engineered mice.

Preclinical Laboratory (Portal Syd)

Cryopreservation techniques and re-derivation services.
Zebrafish Core Facility Provides researchers with fish from wildtype lines, as well as offer the possibility of bringing in mutant/transgenic fish lines of interest from other laboratories.

Other advanced technologies and infrastructures

Biosafety Level 3 The BSL-3 laboratory is platform to develop research work within the HIV field. It has been built for work with microorganisms classified BSL-3, with potential possibility of conversion to a BSL-4 unit.
The Electron Microscopy unit EMil Conventional preparation for TEM and SEM, preparation for immunohistochemistry, morphometric analysis, low temperature techniques such as low temperature embedding, high pressure freezing and cryosectioning (Tokuyasu method).
