In recent years Karolinska Institutet (KI) has introduced a number of research schools for doctoral students. The research schools for doctoral students have more scheduled learning activities than the traditional doctoral education, and the students are mostly clinicians.

At KI there are seven national research schools, one international and four local research schools for clinicians. The research schools are different in many ways: In some schools the education is coherent for several years, but other schools, primarily the clinical research schools, only have the courses in common, that is the 30 compulsory higher education credits.
