Who can apply? When you have been nominated by your home university for exchange studies at Karolinska Institutet, you can apply using the form below.

Will I be admitted? There are only a limited number of places on curricular courses and projects. You apply in competition and a study place cannot be guaranteed. Please choose more than one alternative when filling in the application form, since that will increase you chances of being admitted.

How do I apply? Start the on-line application below by selecting your home university, preferred period of study and language of instruction. Then look through the entire form and read all the information carefully, especially under proposed study programme at Karolinska Institutet. Mandatory information is marked " * ". You will not be able to submit the application if you omit this information.

Have all the information ready when you start. Once you have started to enter the required information on-line, you cannot save it to continue at a later stage. This means that you must have all information ready by the time you wish to submit your application, which will take about 15 minutes to complete. As long as you are actively entering information, there is no time limit.

Remember to print the application and registration number. Please note that you must print your application before you submit it electronically. You submit the application by pressing the "Submit" button at the end of the form. Note that when this is done you cannot make any changes! You will immediately get a notification that your application has been registered along with a registration number unique to your application. Please make a note of this registration number as it is used to check the status of your application.

What do I do with my printed application? Once you have printed the application, sign it and also have it signed by the international coordinator or contact person at your university. Please send the application to the international  coordinator, either scanned or by regular mail, together with:

  • A verified transcript of credits and grades, i.e. list of courses passed at your home university
  • A verified copy of your passport, where your photo and details are visible. The copy MUST be certified by your university, i.e. signed and stamped by somebody who works at your university, who can certify that it is a copy of your passport. A copy of an ID-card is not sufficient.

More information about the programme

A dental hygienist carries out regular oral examinations, makes diagnoses and treats diseases such as caries and periodontitis. He or she also analyses, examines and documents the need for oral health interventions, takes saliva and bacteria samples, removes tartar and other dental coatings, cleans and polishes the teeth and takes x-rays. A dental hygienist can also give pain relief during treatment.

The study programme includes odontological subjects as well as the social and behavioural sciences. It covers the importance of oral health and its affect on general health. Karolinska Institutet´s study programme in dental hygiene provides specialist competence in areas such as tobacco-use cessation, dental phobia, and child and elderly dental care.

Students practise communicating with other professional healthcare groups and work with outreach information. Some courses are studied jointly with dentistry and dental technology students.

After graduation

Dental hygienists work in the public (national dental service) or private sector, either for an employer or for themselves in their own practices. Graduates can opt for further education, such as the continuation course in odontological prophylactics.
