For two centuries, Karolinska Institutet has worked resolutely for the prevention and cure of disease, and its efforts have led to several crucial medical discoveries. Over the past decade alone, the number of scientific breakthroughs has been impressive.

The health problems that Sweden and the world face today are as enormous as they are challenging. In the West, lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stress are reaching crisis levels. The WHO predicts that in twenty years' time, cardiovascular disease will be the world's number one killer, even in countries like India and China, where infection diseases currently dominate. In many parts of the world today, epidemics like HIV/AIDS and malaria are decimating populations and destroying already strained economies.

New discoveries and techniques bring great opportunities for tackling many of the health challenges with which humankind has been struggling for centuries. But if we are to take advantage of our strengths and turn medical discoveries into clinical realities, we need more resources. With strong financial backing, research at Karolinska Institutet will yield the great breakthroughs that areas like cardiovascular disease, brain research, cancer and the global infection diseases need.

With your support, Karolinska Institutet can invest in these future medical advances. Your contribution is important - medical research saves people's lives and helps to improve everyone's quality of life. Medical research fuels economic growth and thus helps build our society. We hope that you will join us, so that we can build it together.

Thank you for supporting Karolinska Institutet's medical research.
