Title: New Methods of Studying Neurodegenerative Disease
Abstract: I will talk about two approaches to studying diseases of the nervous system. The first involves using induced pluripotent stem cells to generate human neurons carrying disease-associated mutations. We have applied this method to investigating Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a genetic childhood motor neuron disorder. I will explain how we’ve provided a new understanding of the basis for motor neuron dysfunction and death. The second approach has taken advantage of a technique that involves parabiosis, the surgical joining of mice. We have used this method to show that the function of already damaged neural tissue can be improved. This has significant, new, implications for the development of treatments for degenerative diseases.
