This paper presents the detection and characterization of two quantitatively distinct modes of mesenchymal (lamellipodial) cell migration and that cancer cells can adapt to the microenvironment by switching between these two migration behaviors. This plasticity may enhance the capability of cancer cells to invade different types of tissue environments and thereby promote metastasis.
