Board of Karolinska Institutet

The function of a board is regulated in Goverment Regulation, the Higher Education Act and the Higher Education Ordinance. 

University Management

The operational leadership of Karolinska Institutet consists of the Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and the university director.

Deputy Vice-Chancellors

The Deputy Vice Chancellors for international affairs, for the coordination of matters relating to future healthcare, and for innovation and commercial outreach are appointed by Karolinska Institutet’s Vice-Chancellor for three-year terms, with a possibile extension. They reinforce the university leadership in the implementation of Strategy 2018. 

Departments

Karolinska Institutet has 22 departments and Comparative Medicine, Unit for Toxicology Sciences, Södertälje, University Library and University Administration.

Management group

The management organisation clarifies the degrees of authority and areas of responsibility of management, and satisfies the requirements of the Higher Education Act and the Higher Education Ordinance for student influence in all preparatory and decision-making bodies.

Deans

Karolinska Institutet’s deans chair the Boards of Higher Education, Doctoral Education and Research and are responsible for each board's activities and budget. The deans coordinate their respective board activities under the direction of KI’s Vice-Chancellor.

Internal Boards

There are three boards at Karolinska Institutet with responsibility for higher education, doctoral/third level education and research respectively. The boards operate under the aegis of the University Board and Vice-Chancellor. Each operational board has a dean, an assistant dean and ordinary members.
